Good Care Month 2021
Posted on - 10th July 2021
Here in the UK, we are finding that not only do we have an overall ageing population, but we are also seeing an increase in more complex needs. This means that more focus is being placed on providing good, high-quality care across the board. Good Care Month was introduced in order to raise awareness and celebrate the excellent work that the individuals do that work in the adult care sector.
Carers in the adult care sector have great pride and dedication in their work. We find that most people who work in the sector love what they do and are enthusiastic about helping others. But more often than not, they do not get the thanks that they deserve. We see the glamorous side of the role, helping those who can't be independent to continue on with their everyday lives, helping those who have had to move into care and nursing homes meet new people and make the most of their surroundings. We seldom see the rougher side of the role. The cleanup after the mess that couldn't be helped, the bruises from the person living with dementia, they didn't mean to, but it doesn't hurt any less, and the long days where all you want to do is go home to your loved ones.
Most carers don't want the appreciation, it's enough to know that they have helped someone improve their quality of life for that day. But we should still be celebrating every day they go to work and help our loved ones, after all, people like these may be helping you one day.
While we will always consider our residents as the most important people that sit in the lounge chairs in our care homes, we cannot forget that the team of carers that assist them every day may also need a place to sit from time to time. And why can't we make this just as comfortable a place to be for them as the residents.
Showing a bit of appreciation to your carers by means of a comfortable place to sit and join the residents in the lounge can surely go a long way, and keep them both happy and healthy.
Take a look at Tub Chairs and Midback Armchairs for a great place to start.
The Next Generation
The carers that you currently have in your care and nursing homes will inevitably encourage the next generation of carers. Good Care Month can be a great time to show the next generation why we choose to be carers and why we love the jobs that we do. Why not consider gathering your team and asking them some simple questions:
- Why did you choose to go into adult care?
- What do you enjoy about your job?
- What challenges have you had to overcome since starting?
- What advice would you give to the next generation of carers?
Then send someone off to local schools or colleges to help show why it is an important and good career choice.
Sometimes, the next generation just needs someone to be honest about the job to appreciate how worthwhile it is.
