Choosing Flame Retardant Furnishings

The safety of our residents in our care homes is one of the most important factors that we consider when it comes to the interior. From ensuring that there is nothing they can harm themselves on, and removing all trip hazards where possible, to putting in place fire doors and fire alarms. Have you considered Flame Retardant Furnishings?

What Is Flame Retardant Material?

Flame retardant materials are fabrics that have been treated with a selection of chemicals or have been created using specialist fire-resistant fibres. This means that the material will burn significantly slower and even at a hotter temperature than the standard equivalent fabric.
Reducing the speed of the burn, or increasing the temperature that the fabric can withstand can help to reduce the spread of the fire, usually enough to enable your residents to evacuate, and fire brigades to stop the fire entirely.

Why Choose Flame Retardant Furnishings

In our care homes, we regularly ensure that all our fire procedures are up to date and can be actioned in the event of a fire. Whether this is a sprinkler system, strategically placed fire extinguishers and even fire doors. Usually, you will also have a plan of evacuation, ensuring the safety of all residents and staff, no matter what time of day.
However, we, unfortunately, know that even the best-laid plans do not always go as planned. By opting for flame retardant furnishings you can increase the time available to action your plan. The biggest source of fuel that the fire will have is the soft furnishings in and around the care home. Changing these soft furnishing to the flame retardant alternative means that the spread of the fire will be greatly slowed. This can either allow you to evacuate, or your fire marshall to utilise a fire extinguisher.
We also note that these fabrics are harder to set alight. This means that in homes where you have difficult residents, they can help to reduce any concerns you may have with fire.
