As the past 12 months have meant that families have been unable to spend as much time together as they would have liked to, what better time than now to show support for National Intergenerational Week (8th – 14th March 2021).
What is National Intergenerational Week?
National Intergenerational week is a week dedicated to building relationships across the different generations, whether this be friendships, or with relatives. This year the campaign has moved online and is encouraging people of all ages to share their memories, interests and passions in a bid to build new friendships and bonds.
What can you do?
As we are still in lockdown, and we can’t welcome the community into our care homes, we have to look at any virtual ideas that we can put into practice. Here are some ideas that you can consider in your home:
Family calls
While we can’t invite residents’ families into the home, we can invite them onto screen. Gather your residents together (where you can) and invite families, in turn, onto the screen to talk to the residents as a group to share their stories across different generations. It’s a lovely way to get the families to see the bond in the home, and for the individual whos family are on screen to share their loved ones with those that they live with.
Youth calls
Many groups cannot currently get together, however, one group that are together every day that will certainly show a generational gap are schools. Find a local school that will be willing to take part in a video call to tell stories from the two separate generations, and who knows the bond wit the school can create new adventures in the future.
Staff stories
While the carers in the home will be exchanging stories with the residents on a daily basis, why not create an event out of it, and get everyone involved across the week.
In your care home, you will have a range of spaces where your residents can all gather together to share their stories amongst themselves and their carers. This time together can create great bonds not only between each other, but also intergenerational with their carers. Create this space with some comfortable new chairs from the range we offer here at Hill & Hill. If you are looking to replace a large number of chairs in your home, please contact a member of the team today who will be happy to assist you.
