Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Awareness Week runs annually, and this year it runs between September 13th and 19th.
While Rheumatoid Arthritis is not linked directly with age, like Osteoarthritis, it is important that in our care homes we are aware of the impacts that it can have on an individual who lives with the condition.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a painful autoimmune disease that affects joints as the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints, leading to inflammation and stiffness, and it isn’t restricted to joints, it also affects the body’s organs, for example, heart and lungs. The condition is seen in women more than in men and affects approximately 1% of the UK population. It is a hidden condition, meaning that people do not always realise that sufferers are living with the disease. At present, there is no known cure. However, recent advances in medicine and research mean that it can now be treated and symptoms managed.
Rheumatoid Arthritis In Our Care Home
Due to the nature of the condition, some individuals will struggle to care for themselves in their own homes, even at an earlier age. For some, this can include being too much for home care, meaning they will move into our care homes younger than they otherwise would. You will also see older residents who have managed at home for many years now starting to struggle with the condition as they get older.
This means that your care home furnishings need to be appropriate and comfortable for those living with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Care Home Chairs
Here at Hill & Hill, we have a range of chairs across different styles. This is because no one-size-fits-all when it comes to chairs.
Our residents will have a range of different requirements, which would mean that what they need out of a chair can vary. For example, our Stanton Wing Armchair has additional support in the arms to allow extra pressure to help the individual mobilise out of the chair as much as possible.
For more information on the best chairs for your residents, please get in touch with a member of our team today who will be happy to discuss your needs and find the most appropriate furniture.
